Towards the end of March, our team had the opportunity to attend the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The event attracts artists, developers, gaming industry experts, and enthusiasts looking to make industry connections or get excited about new releases in gaming tech.
“We were uncertain how it would be [because of the situation with COVID], but it turned out to be a great show, and very well attended,” said co-founder and CTO Michael Berger. “The overall atmosphere was buzzing and we had great conversations with people both on the show floor and outside the conference space. Doing so face-to-face in person made all the difference.”
The booth featured live demos of Speech Graphics technology, including our new timeline editor SGX Director, and the SGX Unreal Engine plugin. These enhancements provide animators with more control over facial expressions, and the ability to work “in-engine”, which means less time importing files and more time realizing the creative vision.
Between showcasing our live demos, this was also a great opportunity for some of our team members to meet for the first time in person.
“GDC is always fun and informative, but for me (and I'm sure many others this year), just meeting co-workers and peers in person was the highlight of the show,” said Elizabeth Walkey, Production Director. “I attended my first GDC 25 years ago and I can say that the thrill of working in this industry and rubbing elbows, from a safe distance, with talented game developers never gets old.”
Our team took time throughout the week of GDC to connect with gaming industry experts, something that had been put on hold by the pandemic. Many people stopped by the booth to experience our live demos as well as learn a little more about the facial animation technology that powers them. This was our team’s first chance to show off new features, tools and integrations in SGX 4.0, which received great interest both from existing customers and people new to Speech Graphics.
“Our booth looked terrific, thanks to the awesome preparation by our team, and pretty much everyone who walked by was mesmerized by our facial animation displays and paused to watch,” said Michael. “We had a steady stream of visitors and did almost nonstop demos for 3 days!”
Visitors to the booth had the opportunity to enter a competition to win a six-month subscription to SGX, combined with professional services worth up to $17,500. The winner of the competition will be announced soon!
“GDC 2022 was a blast! Amazing to meet people face-to-face after so long just chatting on Zoom calls, and it was wonderful to see people’s reactions to the demos. ,” said James Scott, Chief Experience Officer. “Our team is looking forward to being able to do more in-person events in the future.”
